Writing a Position Paper

Here is the Powerpoint that I shared with you on how to write a position paper (there are helpful tips for writing the position paper at the end):

Position Paper Powerpoint - Pizza Edition

Simplified Guides:

Position Paper Outline

Important Position Paper Documents

Here is a sample position paper:

Violence Against Women

Position paper rubric:

Rubric

Remember that your position paper should have 4 distinct parts:
1. Introduction
2. Information about the issue domestically
3. Information about the issue from an international level
4. Conclusion
*Use statistics and quotes SPARINGLY and only when they have a "WOW-factor" to them (only 2-4 MAX per essay).

Formatting:
1.     Your heading should only include the following:
Your name(s)
Committee Name:
Country:
Topic:

*You do NOT need a separate cover page or additional heading, but don’t forget your WORKS CITED page (which will go on a separate piece of paper)
2.     Please use: 12 point (size), Times New Roman font, single spacing through your ENTIRE essay; maximum length is 1 page.

3.     Do use paragraphs; you should end up with about 4 paragraphs for your essay (this is not a strict requirment, you may have one or two more paragraphs).

  1. Hello Mr. Azriel in the part of domestic policy and affairs you mentioned: discuss the national politics, what are you refering to? THANKS :)

  2. Mr Azriel how can we know to which committee we belong to?

  3. For the "DOMESTIC POLICY AND AFFAIRS" section in your first position paper, you are going to want to describe in more detail what the political role of women is and has been in your country. For example, you may talk about when women were granted the right to vote, which women political leaders have existed in your country, or some major contributions that women have made through politics in your country. These are just a few examples. There are many more things you can write about, but it all depends on your specific country.
One thing you should note is that this would NOT be the section to talk about participation in UN or EU initiatives because those are INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS. This aspects belong in the next section of your essay.

  4. For the committee name, you can go ahead and put "UN Women".
Here is a link on this committee. It contains some information that you might find helpful when writing your position paper:

    1. This is especially useful for the "international policy and affairs" section!

  5. You already know what the four sections of the position paper are, but don't forget that everything you include should relate to the topic and your country! For instance, when you are introducing your country and topic in the first paragraph, you SHOULD NOT include irrelevant facts such as when your country was founded or the year that it entered the UN. You SHOULD, however, introduce the importance of the topic and explain your country's stance on the issue.

  7. The simple answer to your question is YES. You need to include all four sections in your position paper. Now, if you have a more specific question or tell me what information you are having trouble finding, then I can help you out a little more.

Click on the link above to check out a very helpful website. This will be a good starting place for you. Remember, you will use this section to discuss your country's involvement in international policy and affairs. This includes international conferences that your country has attended, organizations that they have supported, or committees that they have joined (as they relate to the political role of women). Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
